The quiet part of the government's AI push is MCP, and it matters more than the chatbot.

America.gov is one AI reading 29,000 websites. That is the approach that got the headlines.

There is a second approach running in parallel, with much less attention. Instead of building one chatbot that reads everything, federal teams are publishing their data in a form that any AI can query directly. The standard they are using is the Model Context Protocol, or MCP.

What the government has published

• GovInfo. In January 2026 the Government Publishing Office released a public preview of an MCP server for GovInfo, the official home of federal laws, regulations and congressional documents. Its reasoning was blunt: "training LLM models is time-consuming and expensive, and MCP allows LLMs to access more up-to-date information than they may have been trained on."
• A federal registry. GSA's Technology Transformation Services keeps a public registry of federal data MCP servers, including CDC PLACES, Census, NIH RePORTER, USAspending and USA Analytics.
• A pilot study. In May 2026 the US Digital Corps published a pilot on MCP servers for federal open data. Its summary reports that implementing MCP servers "improved AI systems' data retrieval accuracy by 95%."
• A hackathon. GSA is running a government-wide AI hackathon built around MCP.

Why this matters more than the chatbot

A chatbot is one door, owned by one team, running one set of models. If you prefer a different assistant, too bad.

An MCP server is a door any assistant can use. The data stays with the agency that owns it. The agency decides what is exposed and keeps it current. Whether you use Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or a tool that has not been invented yet, you get the same official answer from the same source.

That is the architecture that actually fixes a knowledge problem. The owner of the data publishes it once. Every AI reads the same thing.

The business version

Your company does not need a custom chatbot. It needs its important facts in a form every AI your team uses can read.

For most companies that means a few systems:

• The CRM, for customers and pipeline.
• The accounting system, for money.
• The operating plan, for who owns what, what the goals are, and what was promised last week.

The first two usually have MCP servers or connectors already. The third is the one almost nobody has, because it usually lives in a slide deck, a spreadsheet and the memory of the leadership team.
