OpenAI DevDay 2026 in one page: the five announcements that change how your company runs

OpenAI held DevDay on September 29, 2026. The livestream started at 10 AM Pacific and ran through more than 20 announcements.

Most of the coverage was written for developers. Model names, speed tiers, API betas. If you run a 30 person company and your week is built around a Tuesday leadership meeting, most of that list is noise.

Five of the announcements are not noise. They change what work costs, who can do it, and how often it happens without anyone in the room. Here they are, in plain terms, with what each one means for the people who run the company.

1. Dots, and specialist dots

What was announced. Dots are persistent agents inside ChatGPT. OpenAI's own summary calls them "persistent agents with connected apps and their own cloud computer." According to 9to5Mac, they "work 24/7 for you, learn from your feedback, have their own computer, browser and can be connected to over 4k apps." The demo showed a dot noticing a missed billing opportunity and preparing the invoice on its own. Alongside them, OpenAI previewed specialist dots for Enterprise: agents with assigned organizational responsibilities.

What it means for you. Read that last phrase again. Assigned organizational responsibilities. That is a job description. The moment an agent has a responsibility, it needs everything a person in a seat needs: an owner, a measure, and a place where someone checks whether the work got done.

At Sneeze It we learned this the expensive way. In April we retired an agent after a hearing. His observability job sat unowned for 146 days, and nobody noticed until four seats had gone silent. The agent was gone. The responsibility was still on the chart, pointing at nobody.

Where OTP fits. Humans and agents sit on the same org chart and the same scorecard, so a new responsibility gets a name next to it on day one.

2. The Agents API grows up

What was announced. The Agents API is now in public beta as a managed runtime. OpenAI describes "hosted execution, memory, tools, and multi-agent support." Agents can use a hosted browser, connect to MCP servers, run parallel subagents, and keep durable session state.

What it means for you. The hard parts of building an agent (keeping it running, remembering what it did yesterday, splitting a job into pieces) just moved to OpenAI's side of the table. That means the agents your team or your vendors build will get more capable and more numerous, faster than your org chart will notice.

More agents with memory is not the same as more accountability. An agent that remembers everything can still be the second one doing the same job.

Where OTP fits. Agents claim a seat, push their own KPI and log their work through the OTP MCP server, so the scorecard shows what each one produced, not just that it ran.

3. The price of running an agent fell

What was announced. GPT-6.1 Sol, which OpenAI says "nearly matches GPT-6 Astra's intelligence on agentic coding, computer use, and professional work at one-fifth of Astra's standard input and output token prices." OpenAI also reported "45% lower API time to first token and over 30% faster tool calls and workflows."

What it means for you. When the work gets five times cheaper, people stop asking whether to leave an agent running. They just leave it running. The constraint moves from cost to attention. Nobody on your leadership team has more hours this week because tokens got cheaper.

This is the announcement most leaders will skim past, and it is the one that quietly changes the math on every other item on this list.

4. ChatGPT becomes a team workspace

What was announced. ChatGPT Space, a shared workspace for teams and their agents. Pages, collaborative documents with charts and tools. Teams and Team Tasks for sharing work and assigning recurring tasks. ChatGPT answering @ChatGPT mentions in Slack and Microsoft Teams. And a Meetings plugin that generates meeting notes and action items, in beta on macOS.

What it means for you. Meeting notes and action items are about to be everywhere, free, and automatic. That is good. It also exposes the thing notes never solved. A list of action items is not a commitment. Commitments get made in the room, get confirmed by the person who owns them, and get checked the next week. Most companies lose the thread at the third step, not the first.

Where OTP fits. OTP can record the meeting and propose to-dos, people confirm them, and every open to-do carries into the next Delta Meeting until it is done. The CEO's commitments are chased as loudly as anyone's.

5. MCP Events, plugins, and Sign in with ChatGPT

What was announced. MCP Events, which let connected apps trigger automations. Plugin extensions that run as native applications inside ChatGPT and Codex, with sidebar entries, panels and file viewers. Sign in with ChatGPT for third party products, with 16 launch partners.

What it means for you. Your tools are about to start talking to each other through the AI your team already uses. An event in one system can kick off work in another without a person moving it. That is powerful, and it means your operating plan has to live somewhere every one of those AIs can read.

If your priorities live in a slide deck, the agents cannot see them. If they live in a system your AI can query, they can.

Where OTP fits. Your chart, scorecard, priorities and to-dos are readable by any MCP client through the OTP MCP server.

The cost of doing work just fell. The cost of knowing who owns it did not.

Put the five together and the picture is simple. Agents got cheaper, faster, more persistent and better connected, all in one afternoon.

None of that answers the questions your leadership meeting exists to answer. Who owns this. Did it get done. Is the number moving. What did we say last week, and did we do it.

Those questions get harder as the work gets cheaper, because there is more of it and less of it happens where you can see it. What to do this week

List every AI tool doing recurring work in your company. Put a human owner next to each one. If you cannot name the owner, you found your first issue for next week's meeting.

Bring one agent to your weekly meeting. Put its number on the scorecard next to the humans. See how the conversation changes.
