Sprint Kickoff Template

Agile / Scrum 30 min Start of every sprint Development team, Scrum Master, Product Owner (3-9 people)

The sprint kickoff template gives the team a short, energizing start to a new sprint. Where sprint planning builds the plan, the kickoff makes sure everyone is genuinely aligned on it before work begins. It is a momentum-setting huddle: clear goal, clear first moves, and shared confidence that the plan holds together.

When to use it

Run a kickoff at the very start of a sprint, right after planning or first thing on day one. It works best for teams that want a clean launch separate from the detailed planning session. Keep it to about thirty minutes since the heavy lifting already happened in planning.

Who attends

The full Scrum team attends: the development team, the Scrum Master, and the Product Owner. Everyone who will contribute to the sprint should be present so the alignment and energy are real.

How to run it

Re-anchor the team on the sprint goal so the purpose is front and center. Walk the committed backlog quickly, confirming acceptance criteria and clearing any last confusion. Clarify who is picking up what and which items the team pulls first. Flag early risks and dependencies so they are visible from day one. Close by confirming the team is aligned and ready, then officially launch the sprint.

Facilitator tips

  • Keep it short since planning already did the deep work.
  • Lead with the goal so momentum builds around a shared purpose.
  • Confirm first moves so no one stares at the board wondering where to start.
  • Surface unknowns early rather than letting them ambush the sprint.

Common mistakes

  • Repeating the entire planning session instead of aligning and launching.
  • Skipping the goal, so the sprint starts as a list of disconnected tasks.
  • Leaving first moves vague, so the first day starts slow.
  • Ignoring known risks until they stall the work mid-sprint.
