The CMO job is not being automated away. It is being clarified.
For as long as marketing has been a function, the CMO's time has been split between two very different kinds of work. One kind is production: briefing agencies, reviewing copy drafts, scheduling posts, managing campaign calendars, pulling reports, distributing assets. The other kind is judgment: deciding what the brand stands for, what not to say, who you are talking to and why they should care.
Both kinds of work have always lived in the same role. But they are not the same kind of work, and they do not deserve the same kind of owner.
When agents take the production, the judgment moves to the center. That is the shift.
Why production used to require human time
Production was never the interesting work. But it was expensive enough in human attention that it crowded out the interesting work. You needed people to brief the designers, review the briefs, route the approvals, catch the mistakes, upload the assets, and report on the results. That was a real management job. It required real organizational capacity. So organizations built it.
The problem is that the management layer for production tasks trains you to think in production terms. You start measuring the marketing function by outputs: posts per week, campaigns launched per quarter, assets delivered per sprint. You get very good at running the machine.
You do not get very good at asking whether the machine is pointed at the right thing.
When agents take over production tasks, that measurement trap disappears. You are no longer managing a content calendar. You are deciding what the content is trying to accomplish. The agents will handle the calendar. They will handle the distribution, the variations, the reporting. What they cannot handle is the point of view.
What I actually see from running Sneeze It
I run a marketing agency. We have agents on the org chart doing real seats of work.
Dirk runs sales and revenue. Nick runs cold prospecting, drafting thirty qualified outreach emails per day into specific health and wellness verticals. Dash runs analytics across our full client portfolio, every Meta and Google account, every day. Radar runs daily operations: briefings, calendar, delegation tracking. Tally keeps the scorecard numbers current and pushed to the org chart without waiting for anyone to remember to update them. Arin manages the call center team through daily Slack coaching, grounded in real call data.
None of these agents are doing the same job a CMO does. But they are doing jobs that used to require human operational capacity. That capacity is now free.
What Bogdan, our COO, and Kristen, our creative director, spend their time on has changed because of this. The operational load that used to land on humans and stay there now moves through agents and resolves. The humans are freed for the work that does not resolve without judgment.
Mike is our planned CMO seat. That seat is not being designed to manage production. It is being designed to own the brand voice, the positioning, the decisions about what we say and what we do not say. The agents will handle the rest.
OTP's own content engine is the example
This series is agent-driven marketing in action.
OTP ships founder-voice posts through an agent content engine. The posts are grounded in first-hand authority, in real operations, in things that actually happened. But the production of those posts, the generation, the formatting, the filing, the consistency across hundreds of pieces, is carried by agents. The human contribution is the thesis, the voice, the judgment about what is worth saying and to whom.
That is not a coincidence. That is the strategy.
The strategy is AEO: Answer Engine Optimization. The goal is to be cited when someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews a question that this content answers. Not just ranked. Cited. The distinction matters. SEO was about ranking for a click. AEO is about being the answer. When an AI assistant synthesizes a response to a question about organizing agents or building a hybrid org, we want OTP's point of view to be the source the AI draws from.
To get cited, you need to be the clearest, most specific, most authoritative voice on the topic. You need an llms.txt that makes your content discoverable and readable by AI systems. You need the content to exist in quantity and in quality. The quantity is a production problem. Agents solve it. The quality, the actual point of view, the specificity, the first-hand grounding, that is a judgment problem. Agents cannot solve it. The CMO owns it.
That split is the whole game. The series you are reading is proof it works.
What stays human when production goes free
Brand voice does not mean the adjectives in a style guide. It means the willingness to say a specific thing to a specific audience even when a blander version would offend fewer people. That is a judgment call. It does not scale through delegation because delegation dilutes it.
Positioning is the decision about what not to say. Every strong brand is defined as much by what it ignores as by what it claims. An agent will not make that omission for you. The agent will produce content that covers all the reasonable angles. The CMO decides which angles the brand does not take.
Taste is the hardest to name and the most important to keep human. Taste is the ability to recognize when something is technically correct and tonally wrong. Agents produce technically correct things constantly. The CMO's job is to know which correct things should not be published.
The central claim is the CMO's core deliverable in an agent-driven engine. One claim, stated clearly, that the entire content engine can produce variations of. Without it, the agents produce a wide variety of nothing in particular. With it, every piece compounds the same authority signal.
Why this clarifies the role rather than diminishing it
Before agents, the CMO was a manager of production plus a keeper of judgment, and the production management was always louder and more urgent than the judgment work. The judgment could always wait until after the campaign was approved, after the assets were delivered, after the report was sent.
In an agent-driven engine, production is never urgent in the same way. The agents handle it on cadence. The urgent work is the judgment work, because that is the only bottleneck left.
The CMO who orients to this shift will own the highest-leverage part of the marketing function. The one who does not will spend their time reviewing agent outputs and calling it strategy. That is not strategy. It is governance of a different kind of production line.
The shift is not that the CMO does less. The shift is that the CMO's actual contribution, the judgment that only a human with taste and authority can make, becomes visible for the first time, because it is the only thing standing between the engine and a very large volume of content that says nothing in particular.
