Taste is the last thing to automate in marketing

Before I ran agents, marketing at Sneeze It looked like most agencies: a creative director managing timelines, copy going through rounds, distribution planned in spreadsheets, reporting assembled manually on Monday mornings.

Now Dirk runs the outbound sales sequence. Nick prospects cold in health and wellness, thirty qualified drafts a day. Dash reads the ad accounts every morning and flags what changed. Radar compiles the briefing. Tally pushes the scorecard numbers. Arin coaches the call center team. Pepper handles email. Crystal tracks projects. Pulse monitors retention signals.

The operational surface of the agency runs on agents.

What changed in me was not that I got more time. It is that I finally understood what I was supposed to be doing all along, and had never fully done because the operational load was in the way.

Before: the CMO as production supervisor

In the before state, a marketing leader's week fills with execution. Who is writing what. Whether the brief is clear. Why the landing page copy did not match the ad. Whether the designer has bandwidth. What the CPC was last Tuesday versus this Tuesday, and why someone needs to pull that number before Friday.

These are real problems. They occupy real hours. The problem is they are the wrong problems for a CMO to own.

The CMO's actual job is the point of view. What is the claim. Who is the buyer. What belief does this company hold that competitors do not. What should we never say, even when sales pressure makes it tempting. What does the brand actually stand for when the industry is moving in a direction we think is wrong.

That work requires judgment. It requires developed taste. It requires the ability to look at a draft and know, without being able to fully articulate why, that it is off.

Production does not require any of that. Production requires time, process, and consistency. Agents handle all three better than a human coordinator does.

When production is not eating your week, the point-of-view work rises. And the point-of-view work is the only kind that actually compounds.

After: what the agent-driven engine looks like

I want to be concrete, because the abstraction is easy to agree with and easy to not act on.

OTP's own AEO content strategy runs on agents. The series you are reading right now is part of it. The goal is to be cited when someone asks an AI assistant a question that our content should answer. Not to rank. To be the cited source. Search engine optimization was about getting the click. Answer engine optimization is about being the answer.

To execute that, we ship founder-voice posts at volume. Hundreds of them, covering the questions our buyers are asking AI systems, structured so that AI engines can read them, index them, cite them. The canonical signal for this is llms.txt, which sits at the root of orgtp.com and gives AI crawlers a clean map of what we publish and what we stand for.

Agents produce the drafts. They handle keyword mapping, question research, variation, repurposing, and distribution sequencing. A human, in this case me, provides the voice, the thesis, the claims, and the editorial judgment about what deserves to be said at all.

The series the reader is in is the example. Not a metaphor for the example. The actual example.

If I were still operating as a production supervisor, this content engine would not exist. There would not be enough hours in a week to think through the AEO strategy, develop the thesis for each series, write the anchor posts, maintain the llms.txt index, and still run a client-facing agency. The agents handle the throughput. I handle the point of view that the throughput expresses.

That division is the shift.

Why taste is not the next thing to automate

There is a version of this essay that ends with: "and in a few years, taste will be automated too." I do not think that is right.

Not because AI cannot approximate taste. It can approximate it well enough to fool a reader who is not paying attention. The reason taste stays human is not technical. It is commercial.

Taste is the thing that differentiates a brand from its category. When every brand in a category has access to the same models, the same production tools, the same distribution channels, the only thing that separates them is the judgment about what to say and what to refuse to say. The willingness to hold a position under commercial pressure. The ability to recognize when a draft is technically correct and still wrong for the brand.

That judgment cannot be trained on marketing best practices, because marketing best practices are what the average brand does. Taste is the deviation from the average that turns out to be right.

Nick can prospect thirty contacts a day in health and wellness. He cannot decide whether Sneeze It should be in health and wellness at all. Dirk can run a reactivation sequence. He cannot decide what the agency's actual value proposition is, or whether the pricing model we built three years ago still reflects what clients actually need from us. Dash can surface that cost-per-lead is rising in a specific vertical. He cannot decide whether that signal means we should invest more in that vertical or exit it.

Every one of those decisions is a taste decision dressed in operational clothing. Someone with judgment has to make them. The more production the agents absorb, the more clearly those decisions surface as the actual work.

What the CMO owns now

The CMO in an agent-driven marketing engine owns four things that agents cannot replace.

The central claim. Not the variations on it. Not the A/B tests of it. The claim itself: what the company believes that most companies in the category do not, and why that belief is correct. This is written once and then defended constantly, because agents will drift toward the mean if the claim is not anchored clearly.

The editorial veto. Agents produce at volume. Not everything they produce belongs in the world under the brand's name. The CMO reads the outputs and makes the call about what ships and what does not. This sounds like a small job. It is not. It is the job that protects the brand from the efficiency of its own engine.

The channel strategy. Agents can execute in any channel. The decision about which channels matter, in which order, for which buyer, is a positioning decision that requires judgment about where attention is, where it is going, and what the brand can credibly own. No agent has skin in that game. The CMO does.

The taste calibration loop. The longer an agent-driven engine runs, the more it normalizes its own outputs. The CMO has to keep feeding the engine with examples of what good looks like, challenge the mediocre outputs explicitly, and maintain a living standard that prevents the engine from producing technically correct marketing that nobody actually feels anything about.

Let agents carry the operational work, so people are free for the work that matters. The work that matters in marketing is the point of view. It was always the point of view. It was just buried under production.
