Traditional franchise management software was built for the franchisor. OTP portfolio was built for the operator.

Here is something that gets clearer the longer you spend inside franchising: most of the software built for multi-unit operators was designed to serve the franchisor's reporting needs, not the operator's operational ones.

The franchisor wants compliance data, royalty tracking, and audit logs. Those are legitimate needs. But when 19.3% of franchisees control 58.8% of all locations (FRANdata/IFA 2026), the operators running five, ten, or thirty units are not primarily worried about compliance reporting. They are worried about the 6 AM text from a location manager who cannot find the SOP, the location that looks fine on last month's P&L but is quietly bleeding leads this week, and the question no dashboard currently answers: which of my locations is actually operating the way I trained them to operate.

Traditional franchise management software does not answer that question. It describes what already happened. OTP portfolio is built to show what is happening now, location by location, against a standard that corporate set once.

That is the central difference, and the rest of this post is going to walk through why it matters.

The old model: software that measures the past

The lifecycle of a traditional franchise management system goes like this.

You buy a platform to track compliance, document distribution, training completion, and financial reporting across your locations. The platform does what it was designed to do. Franchisees complete their modules. Financials upload on a lag. The dashboard shows aggregate numbers.

Then a location starts underperforming.

You usually know about it six to twelve weeks after it starts. The audit comes back with a flag. The financial upload shows margin compression. Someone on the field team notices that the location's numbers look off compared to last quarter. By then, "months of revenue opportunity have been lost," as FranConnectGO puts it directly. You are "always playing catch-up."

The phrase that comes up every time I talk to multi-unit operators is the same one. Visibility lag. The system captures what happened. By the time it captures it, the window to intervene has already closed.

This is not a complaint about the software category. It is a structural consequence of building systems around backward-looking financial data. The category was built in an era when monthly P&L uploads were the best signal available. That era is over.

The breaking point: what the platform model misses

When operators with 50+ units grew 118.52% between 2010 and 2018 (the fastest-growing tier per FRANdata), the operational question that came with that growth was not "how do I track compliance better." It was "how do I run ten locations with the same operational discipline I had when I ran two."

Two locations, you can feel. You are in both buildings regularly. The manager calls you directly. You know the metrics because you have been watching them for years. You know what a good Monday looks like versus a slow one.

Ten locations, you cannot feel. You are working off reports. The reports are lagged. The managers are calling with problems you cannot diagnose from a PDF. And the traditional platform you bought to manage scale is giving you historical data organized by the franchisor's compliance categories, not by the operational KPIs you actually care about.

What the platform model misses is this: every location is a business. It has its own people, its own rhythm, its own week. Managing it with aggregate reports is like trying to coach a team by reading last month's box scores. You can see trends. You cannot see what is happening today.

The multi-unit operator's real need is a live view of each location as its own operating unit, combined with a portfolio rollup that shows how all those units compare to each other against a standard they all share. That is not a compliance platform. That is a different category of tool entirely.

The OTP model: one org per location, one portfolio for the system

When I built the OTP portfolio feature (available now in early access through Labs), I was not trying to build a franchise management platform. I was solving a problem I live with at Sneeze It, which is how to run a hybrid organization where humans and AI agents share one scorecard and one accountability structure.

The connection to franchising is structural, not cosmetic. A franchise system is a portfolio. Each location is its own operating org. The franchisor is the parent view that holds all those orgs together.

OTP maps directly onto that.

Each location gets its own org in OTP. That org has its own chart: the GM on one seat, the front-desk manager on another, the call center agent (an Arin-equivalent) tracking speed-to-lead and appointment booking rate, the retention function (a Pulse-equivalent) watching client churn, the analytics seat (a Dash-equivalent) pulling weekly lead volume and cost-per-lead from whatever ad platform the location runs. Every seat on one scorecard. One-seat-one-owner, which means no ambiguity about who is accountable for what number.

At Sneeze It, that structure is not hypothetical. Radar runs our daily briefing across the whole operation. Tally pushes KPI values to the scorecard every few hours without anyone doing it manually. Arin manages our call center team and tracks appointment booking rate against a 30% target across every client account we run. Dash pulls Meta and Google performance for every account in our portfolio and flags anomalies before they show up in a monthly report. Crystal tracks project delivery. Dirk manages the sales pipeline. Pepper handles inbound email triage. Each seat has one clear owner and one clear metric the business depends on.

The OTP portfolio layer takes that per-org structure and rolls it up. When a location pushes its appointment booking rate to the portfolio, that number feeds into a portfolio super-metric that aggregates across all member locations. The franchisor sees the system-wide rate and can immediately identify which locations are above standard and which are behind. That is location-to-location benchmarking without a custom report, without a data export, without a monthly analytics call.

Presets: the brand standard problem solved structurally

Here is the piece that makes the portfolio model genuinely different for franchising, not just incrementally better.

Traditional franchise management software handles brand consistency through document distribution and training completion tracking. You upload the SOP. You send the training. You audit for completion. Franchisees confirm they received it. Then each location goes back to running the way it was already running, because confirmation of receipt is not the same thing as adoption of practice.

The OTP portfolio has a presets mechanism. The portfolio (corporate) sets the default chart structure: which seats exist, what KPIs those seats are accountable for, what the targets are. Every member org (each location) inherits those defaults. And corporate can lock them.

Locked means the location cannot change the standard. They can run their own operations inside the standard. They cannot redefine what the standard is. The operating standard is set once at the portfolio level and propagates to every location automatically.

This is the franchise consistency problem solved at the structure level, not the document level. You are not distributing a PDF and hoping it gets read. You are defining the accountability structure that every location operates inside, and the software enforces it.

What the comparison actually looks like

Put the two models side by side through the lifecycle of a new location opening.

Traditional platform: new location completes onboarding modules, receives document package, gets added to the compliance dashboard, appears as a row in the aggregate report starting the month after they go live.

OTP portfolio: new location gets invited as a member org. They inherit the preset chart the portfolio has already defined. The GM slot, the call center seat, the analytics seat are already there. KPI targets are already set. The location starts pushing numbers from day one. The portfolio super-metrics include that location the same week it opens. Corporate sees it on the same view as every other location, with the same benchmarking structure.

One model adds a location to a reporting system. The other adds a location to an operating system.

The difference compounds. After six months, the traditional model has compliance data and lagged financials. The OTP portfolio has six months of weekly KPI data across every seat, with trend lines, location-to-location comparison, and a complete record of which locations held standard and which drifted.

That is the visibility that multi-unit operators have been asking for since the concentration curve started bending. 19.3% of franchisees controlling 58.8% of locations is not a statistic about size. It is a statement about the operational problem those operators are solving every day at a scale that traditional franchise software was not built for.
