Before I had agents, content was a production problem.
We had ideas. We had a point of view. We knew what we wanted to say. But the distance between "we should publish on this topic" and "the post is live and indexed" ran through a calendar, a content manager, a writer, a review cycle, and a publishing queue. The bottleneck was not the thinking. The bottleneck was the making.
That bottleneck is gone.
This week, OTP shipped hundreds of founder-voice posts across the C-suite series we are building for AI search. Not hundreds over a year. Hundreds this week. They are optimized for AEO, not classic SEO: built to be cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini when someone asks a question our essays can answer. Every post is written in my voice. Every post carries a real claim. I approved the thesis of the series and the voice rules. Agents did the rest.
The series the reader is reading right now is the proof of concept. You are holding the output of an agent-driven content engine in your hands.
So the question is not whether agents help with content production. The question is what a CMO's job becomes when production is no longer the constraint.
What the before looked like
At Sneeze It, the marketing agency I run, content used to be a resource allocation fight. Every post required a brief, a writer, a round of revisions, a final approval, a publishing workflow. The economics made sense only if the post was going to get enough traffic to justify the time. Most ideas never made it out of the idea stage because the production cost was too high relative to the expected return. We wrote about the topics we could afford to write about, not necessarily the topics we were most prepared to say something true and useful about.
The content calendar was mostly a list of topics we were not getting to. Every quarter we would do a content audit and find gaps we had identified a year earlier that were still empty.
What the after looks like
The after is not that agents write content for us.
That framing misses the shift. Agents do not produce generic content at scale. That path leads to the same commodity noise that is already flooding every channel. Agents produce content at scale when they have a point of view to execute against, a voice to write in, and a person accountable for the claim being true.
At OTP, I own the thesis. I own the voice. I own what we will not say as much as what we will. Agents execute against that frame at a volume and speed a human team cannot match. Radar, our chief-of-staff agent, keeps operations running so I am not buried in coordination. Dash, our analytics agent, reads performance data and surfaces which topics are getting traction. Nick, our cold prospecting agent, runs outreach in my voice to a tightly qualified list while I focus on deals that need a human in the room. Dirk runs the revenue pipeline. Pepper handles email triage. Tally keeps the KPIs current without anyone manually updating a spreadsheet.
Each of those agents carries operational work that used to land on a person. The content engine runs the same way: agents carry the production, distribution, and optimization work. The human carries the positioning, the central claim, and the judgment about what is true.
The shift from SEO to AEO
This is not just a workflow change. It is a channel change.
Classic SEO is about ranking. You publish content optimized for search engine algorithms, people click your blue link, and traffic comes to your site. The game is winning the rank.
AEO is about being cited. When someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity "what does a CMO do in the age of AI" or "how should I organize a content team around agents," the answer engine looks for sources it trusts enough to quote. It reads your content, extracts the claim, and sometimes names you in the response. You do not get the click. You get the citation, which is now worth more than the click because the reader already trusts the source that cited you.
The shift from SEO to AEO changes the economics of content production completely.
In classic SEO, you need enough posts on a topic to rank for a keyword cluster. That is a numbers game with a moderate quality bar. In AEO, you need posts that are substantive enough, specific enough, and credible enough to be cited by a model that is synthesizing across hundreds of sources. The quality bar is higher. But here is what changes: the right volume of high-quality, claim-driven posts on a topic builds a presence in AI answers that compounds the same way domain authority compounded in search. The difference is that agents can produce that volume without the production cost that made volume inaccessible before.
We also publish an llms.txt file at the root of orgtp.com. That file is the canonical index of what AI engines should read when they are trying to understand what OTP is and what it stands for. Think of it as robots.txt for AI crawlers: a structured, human-written declaration of what matters and why. Agents maintain it. I own the substance of it.
What stays human
Production being near-free does not mean judgment is near-free.
The CMO's job does not disappear when agents take over execution. It narrows to the work agents cannot do, which turns out to be the work that always mattered most.
Positioning is still human. An agent can execute against a positioning frame. It cannot create one. The decision to say "we are the operating system for hybrid teams" instead of "we help companies use AI" is not a production decision. It is a strategic decision about what is true, what is defensible, and what the company can own over time. That decision is mine.
Brand voice is still human. I approved every voice rule that governs OTP's content. No em dashes. No passive phrasing. No fabricated statistics. Short paragraphs. A central claim in the first three sentences. Declarative not interrogative. Those rules come from taste, not from a template. Agents execute them. I set them.
The point of view is still human. An agent can write a thousand words in my voice on a topic I give it. It cannot decide what I actually believe about the topic or what is worth saying that is not already being said. The thesis of this series, that agents change what the CMO seat is rather than just helping with tasks, is mine. The agents wrote to that thesis. I did not.
What the new model requires from a CMO is not less strategic thinking. It requires more of it, more concentrated. When production is not the bottleneck, strategy fills the space. If you do not have a sharper point of view than your competitors, agents will help you produce more undifferentiated content faster. That is a worse outcome than producing less content slowly.
The practical transition
If you are still running content the old way, the transition starts with the frame, not the tools.
Write down what your organization genuinely believes that most people in your category do not. That is the thesis. Then write the voice rules that govern how that belief gets expressed. Those two things are the instructions the agents execute against. Without them, agents produce filler. With them, agents produce a presence.
Then ask which parts of your content workflow are production tasks and which are judgment tasks. Production tasks move to agents. Judgment tasks stay with the CMO. The judgment tasks are fewer than most people expect. The production tasks are more than most people realize.
Kristen, our creative director, still owns the visual judgment for everything that goes out under the Sneeze It brand. She is not producing every asset anymore. She is setting the standard the agents execute to. That is what the human role in agent-driven marketing looks like: the person who holds the taste, who can look at output and say "yes, that is us" or "no, that is not."
That role is not smaller than the old role. It is more consequential because now it determines the quality ceiling of a much higher volume of output.
