# Performance Review

> A periodic review built on documented examples and clear expectations that develops people instead of surprising them.

**Category:** HR & People

**When to use:** On the review cycle, or before any compensation or promotion decision.

**Trigger:** A scheduled review cycle

## Steps

1. Gather documented examples from the period: outcomes delivered, behaviors, and any peer input.
2. Compare performance against the role's expectations, not against other people.
3. Write specific strengths and specific growth areas, each with an example.
4. Draft a development plan with one or two focused goals for the next period.
5. Hold the conversation as a dialogue, not a verdict, and listen for the employee's view.
6. Agree on the goals in writing and set the next check-in.

## Outputs

- A written review grounded in examples
- A development plan with one or two goals
- An agreed next check-in date

## Tools

- HR system
- Review template

## Notes

Nothing in a review should be a surprise. If the growth area is news at review time, the manager skipped the in-the-moment feedback all period.
